The Castle Law is one of the most interesting Self-Defense laws that exists in the United States but is largely derived from the English Common Law. The original Book 4, Chapter 16 of William Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws of England states that a man has the right to protect his house (also called his castle) and there is no possible way to lawfully enter the house, except for cases when it is needed for Public Safety (for example during a lawsuit). Americas Castle Doctrine version labeled as Law or a Defense of Habitation Law, goes a bit further, it designates one’s place of residence (or, in some states, any place legally occupied, such as one’s car or place of work) as a place in which one enjoys protection from illegal trespassing and violent attack and guarantees the right of the owner to use deadly force to protect his castle. The whole controversy here revolves around the fact that homicide is justified under the Castle Doctrine. As for the Canadian Criminal Code the laws on defense of property state that not more that necessary force can be used to protect the property, but no specific limits are specified. The Castle Law and the Canadian Criminal Code also give the same legal rights to any other innocent person legally inside the house during the incident. Not all the states support the Castle Doctrine. Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia have the Castle Doctrine, other states Montana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wyoming have their own versions of Property Defense laws.

In various states the law has different limitations for instances in which the Castle Doctrine can be used, and what degree of retreat or non-deadly resistance (if any) is required before the usage of deadly force. At first the occupants of the house must be in the house legally. If the occupants of the house are fugitives or are using the Doctrine to assist fugitives their actions are not justified by the doctrine. Generally the doctrine can be used against a person who is trying (or tried) to unlawfully and/or forcibly enter the Castle (home, business or car). Police officers can enter the house only after a valid warrant was presented to the owner, in other cases it is illegal. That’s why in most of the movies, when a policemen in the U.S is entering the house for some unlawful investigation he can be shot on sight. The occupants of the house must also reasonably believe that the intruder intends to inflict serious bodily harm or death or intends to commit some other felony, such as arson or burglary. Also if the intrusion was provoked by the occupants of the house, the following use of any force may not be justifiable. The Castle Doctrine itself is a very interesting law mechanism that is definitely one of the cornerstones of the citizens rights in the United States, still this stone is very often used not in the way it was supposed to and even during the last years it triggered few controversial lawsuits.

Conventional Marketing – Never underestimate the power of conventional tactics to help promote your new website. If you have a physical storefront, you can hand out leaflets or brochures promoting your website to existing customers, who can refer more business your way. Other methods might include sending out mailers, advertising in periodicals, phone sales, email newsletters, customer referral programs, contests, or coupons only available on your website. You can even post your products or services on free online classifieds that link directly to your side. The possibilities are endless.

Tell Your Customers – Your best sales force are your repeat customers. Be sure to inform them of your new website, as they can drive business there faster and usually for free. No form of marketing beats a personal recommendation, so make sure you are asking your customers to spread the word. You will be surprised at how effective your happy customers can be.

There seems to be a lethal combination of short deadlines making everything urgent, top customers becoming even more demanding, restrictions on recruitment and tempers getting frayed.

The knock-on effects and hidden costs of this, if not properly managed, are more mistakes, misunderstandings and lower-quality services. In today’s competitive environment having good relationships with your top clients is critical. In fact ‘good’ is not enough. Our relationships need to be excellent.

The immense pressure from all angles is taking its toll. The charity Relate, which supports people experiencing difficulties in their personal relationships, has seen a significant increase in enquiries because the pressures of work – or the lack of it – are overflowing into the home.

A few of my clients are reporting that previously-loyal customers are going elsewhere because the bean-counters are demanding cost reduction. What this really means is that the buyer who may have a good relationship with you is not equipped to explain and justify your products and services to the people whose jobs depend on providing evidence of cutting costs. The tragedy is that if you don’t have excellent relationships with your clients the ‘Added Value’ and longer-term benefits you provide will not even be noticed, let alone explained to others.

The New Business Era
Richard Lambert, the CBI’s director-general, recently said: “We may be at the start of a new era for businesses, in which attitudes to corporate leadership are changed for a generation by the shock of the past two years.

“What we now need is a more balanced, less risky pathway to growth – one in which the short-term returns may be lower, but the long-term rewards for management success will be a lot more sustainable and secure.

“There are important questions around how businesses are going to invest in the future. And in a more collaborative, less transactional world, closer relationships with customers, suppliers, employees and shareholders look like becoming the new norm.”

More than ever we need to be able to get under our customers’ skin, identify their biggest concerns and support them at a level that your competitors ’simply cannot reach’. This requires an excellent relationship.

But as with all the good things in life, developing excellent relationships takes effort, courage, and often means stepping out of your comfort zone. However the most frequent excuse I hear is; “But I don’t have the time!”

Saying that is a bit like the swamped and overwhelmed manager who complains that he doesn’t have time to do his course on Time Management, or is too busy to do appraisals and then complains about the performance of his people. The quality of your relationships within your team has a direct correlation with the levels of performance they are able to achieve. This ultimately impacts on what you can achieve.

Can You Afford Not To Invest?
There are some things that are simply too expensive not to invest in, and relationships probably come top of the list. But what we need to address before focusing on how to build extraordinary relationships it that “Something has got to give . . .”

Isn’t it funny that all the books, seminars and audio programmes always talk about what you need to do more of, but nobody ever tells us what we should do less of! “Sounds great” I hear you say ” . . . and how exactly are we going to do that?”

It’s the easiest thing in the world to create an exciting new expectation, to add another to-do to the list, to make the plans . . . but then ‘reality’ takes over and another 3 months go by without getting to all that ‘important’ stuff.

So looking ahead to the new decade, the question is perhaps not so much “What do you want to do?”, but “What will you want to say No to?”

After all, if we cannot say ‘No’, what value does our ‘Yes’ have?

I appreciate the choices involved are not always easy ones. But making lots of tiny changes will often produce a bigger and longer-lasting positive result than attempting one perfectly-executed grand gesture. Taking a small step with 10 of the following will produce a greater effect than doing one completely.

Get Committed
Once you recognise that ‘good relationships’ are not enough and you really commit to developing ‘excellent relationships’ it is often surprising how you notice new opportunities, and it becomes easier to implement more of the list above.

Question: Are there differences in the Economy Class for Singapore Airlines?

Seems as though I can’t “upgrade” unless I have a certain Economy class. So not all Economy seats are the same? What are the differences, are they big? I heard great things about Singapore Air, and was hoping to get a glimpse of it with Economy as I cannot afford the $10,000 First Class seats. =( But I wanted to try upgrading from Economy to Business using points. They won’t let me. I guess I have the crappiest of crappy Economy seats…

Answer: What they mean is that you can't upgrade certain fare classes of tickets, you probably bought a heavily discounted ticket, which is not upgradeable. You will get the same service and seat as everybody else in economy, it's just that airlines have so many different pricing schedules that you may sit next to someone who paid much more than you, for the exactly the same seat and service. If you look carefully at your ticket, there should be a letter designating the fare class, it could m,l,k,y etc., all it represents is how much you paid and what the restrictions are concerning schedule changes, refunds, upgrades etc.. Singapore Airlines does have a premium economy class with more legroom, but only on their Airbus A340-500 planes. You can always ask when you check in if it's possible to upgrade, if there's space available they just might upgrade you, especially if you're a member of their frequent flyer program.

on the website it says that the maximum weight of the suitcases is 23kg.. but i checked with a staff member at my city terminal and they said that for business class the maximum is 32.. is this correct?

Changing your name is a simple legal procedure that doesn’t require a lawyer. You can’t just change your name though, you have to go through the appropriate legal procedure. If you feel uncomfortable handling your own paperwork you can hire a lawyer, but of course that would cost a lot more than handling the paperwork yourself.

Changing your name is a big deal, but that doesn’t mean it’s hard to do or even complex. When you decide to legally change your name you completely abandon your old name. You can however go back to your old name If you go through the entire legal name change procedure again if later on you decide you want it back. You can not just decide one day you want to change your name and start using it on your legal documents. You have to follow the appropriate procedure.

The first thing you need to do is choose a new name. Sit down and figure out which legal name you want to have. There’s so many possibilities, so make sure you feel comfortable with the name you want before you proceed. Again, this is a very big decision, and it shouldn’t be a split second decision. You should put some serious thought into a name that you really want.

Do not try to side step the law by using a new name without a judge first granting the new name to you. There isn’t much required in order to petition the court to grant your new name. All you need to do in order to petition the court is to file your state’s compliant name change forms at your counties clerk office. You can get the legal name change forms you need online. Once you have the legal name change forms you need all you do is fill in the blanks, grab a witness, date, sign, and notarize the name change forms. It’s that simple. Officially changing your name is a very simple legal procedure, and you should not feel intimidated.

Once you’ve petitioned the court to grant your new name then you will get a court date to appear before the judge. At this court date the judge will either grant you your new name or deny it. If it’s granted you will get the paperwork you need to use in order to change your name on your legal documents, such as your driver’s license, birth certificate, social security card, etc. Once you have a copy of those vital identification documents with your new name then you can use those to change your name on your bills and bank account. Most banks will even accept the judge certified name change forms even If you haven’t changed your name on your driver’s license yet
